A YouGov poll for the Times’ Red Box (1) has revealed that 26% would vote Green if they “had a chance of winning” in their constituency in the May 2015 General Election.

The Green Party are standing in ‘at least’ 75% of seats in the General Election. That means 50% more people will have the opportunity to vote Green next year compared to the 2010 General Election.

Today's poll puts the Greens in third and ahead of both Ukip (24%) and the Liberal Democrats (16%).

Natalie Bennett, Green Party Leader, said:

“This poll demonstrates that more and more people are considering voting Green next Spring. We are finding that as more people get the opportunity to learn about Green values and policies the more likely they are to both sign up as members (2) and vote Green.

“This polling also demonstrates just how disillusioned voters are with the business-as-usual policies and politics presented by the traditional main parties. The politics of the future does not have to be like the politics of the past and it is exciting that more people than ever before will have the opportunity to vote for a positive Green alternative in May.”

The Greens have out-polled the junior Coalition partners in General Election intention voting on three occasions (3) in the last month. Earlier this week, the Greens polled at 8%, their highest rating ever with pollster YouGov (4).

Commenting on the poll, leading political commentator George Eaton wrote in the New Statesman (5), “that 26 per cent are prepared to contemplate voting for the Greens shows the extent to which traditional loyalties are fraying”.

Combined support for the two traditional main parties has dipped below 60% in the Ashcroft National Poll for the past three weeks running (6).

YouGov polled 1,906 UK adults. The question they asked was “If candidates from the following parties were standing in your constituency and had a chance of winning, how likely would you be to vote for them?”
