Cllr. James Abbott was selected as the Green Party candidate in Witham Constituency in late 2014. He has stood at each General Election since 1992 in Braintree Constituency and each European election from 1994 to 2009.

James was elected to Braintree District Council in 1999, re-elected in 2003 and re-elected again in 2007, each time with a larger majority.

He is Chairman of Witham and Braintree Green Party, Co-ordinator of Essex Green Party and the national Green Party Spokesperson on Science and Technology.

James attended the Gilberd School in Colchester, where he obtained 12 O levels, 3 A levels (Physics, Maths, Economics) and an S level (Economics). He studied Astronomy at University College London, graduating with an honours degree in 1982.

Until 1987, James worked as an archaeologist in Essex and London. In 1987 he started his own gardening and tree growing business, which continues.

A writer and lecturer in Green politics, climate change and astronomy, James built an observatory, completed in 2002, which is mainly used for studying comets.

James wrote and appeared in a Channel 4 "Comment" programme in 1989 on Antarctica and has since been a regular contributor to regional TV and radio programmes in Essex, as well as local and regional newspapers.

Married with 3 children, he was a school governor at a local primary school for 10 years.

James's interests include the countryside, rock music and science fiction films. He has travelled widely in Europe, particularly Scandinavia and Iceland. In 1986, he visited Zimbabwe to observe Halley's comet.
