The safety of GM foods is in doubt

20 June 2013

RESPONDING to Environment Secretary, Owen Paterson’s attack on critics of Genetically Modified (GM) crops, Green Party Euro Candidate for London, Caroline Allen said;

“What is surprising and also worrying is that no one actually seems to be really monitoring for any adverse effects of GM, or even checking if the claims made by GM companies about benefits are real.

“Paterson mentions there is no scientific evidence shown directly linking GMOs to higher risk environment or safety, but lacks to go into detail. It is clear that genuine, independent epidemiological studies are required into the impacts of GM food, but are currently lacking.

“We feel there is yet to be a convincing case made that GM is safe; not just for humans but also considering the impact they have on the eco-systems where they are released and on biodiversity.”
