House of Lords
On Monday 15th July the Green Party received a message from the Cabinet Office indicating that Theresa May wished to include a Green Party peer in her retirement honours list. An answer was wanted by the 16th, but an extension to Thursday 18th was allowed.
At this stage the Green Party had not selected an ordered list of nominees for places in the House of Lords. A short list of six had been determined by a properly constituted selection panel, and this was due to go to national ballot this summer.
If there had been no shortlist there would have been no option but to refuse the offer of a place in the House of Lords, however after consultation SOC agreed that there was no time to conduct a ballot under the requirements of Appendix C of the Constitution, and the only acceptable route was to have a selection by the members of GPRC, as representing the membership between conferences provided that GPRC voted to make a decision in this way for the well being of the Party, that there was involvement from the Green Party of Northern Ireland, and that the candidates agreed to the procedure.
In the event two of the six potential candidates, recently elected as MEP’s, chose not to stand, the remaining four accepted the change in process. GPRC agreed to select, and the Northern Ireland Party were involved.
The rules set required each candidate to submit an up to date two page statement, and to participate in an on-line hustings that would be recorded and made available to any members of GPRC/GPNI who were not able to participate in the live hustings.
Voting took place after the hustings with all those eligible to vote participating using Opavote.
