The Green Parties of the UK are electing a new list of nominees to the House of Lords.
The Greens believe in a fully elected second chamber and would abolish the unelected House of Lords in its current form. However, while it exists, the Green Party of England and Wales and the Green Party of Northern Ireland believe it is right for the Green Party to take our seats in the Lords. Doing so gives us a platform to influence and implement policy change, elevate Green values in national debates, and advocate from within Parliament for democratic reform, including the Lords’ own abolition.
To counterbalance the undemocratic nature of House of Lords appointments, the Green Party introduces our own democracy to the process, by selecting our list of nominees to the Lords through a vote of all members.
We are seeking nominees who reflect the best of the party – deeply committed to Green values, ready for and serious about the demands of the role, and able to build our credibility on the national stage.
